After COVID-19 beach season, outdoor seating permits are again up for grabs for Rehoboth restaurants

Delaware News Desk

Dreaming of the summer beach season? Rehoboth Beach restaurants are taking important steps to prepare for outdoor dining as the weather warms once again.

Restaurants have begun applying for permits to create seating on sidewalks and public areas. Officials with the city of Rehoboth Beach are in the process of reviewing those applications and contacting the businesses.

The city advises restaurants that if they want to offer any outdoor seating that encroaches upon public spaces, they must apply no later than March 1.

“The March 1 deadline gives the city time to coordinate with the restaurants to maintain public safety during the pandemic so that outdoor dining can begin by the first weekend in April,” City Manager Sharon Lynn said.

Barriers at Rehoboth Beach block off parking spaces to create more outdoor seating during the 2020 summer season.

City staff will establish how much distance is needed so pedestrians can safely walk around the dining areas and still avoid traffic. They will also determine how many barriers each restaurant will need.

The city is implementing a public outdoor space operating plan similar to the one that was in effect until Nov. 1.

Retail businesses that place racks outside of their stores can have them up to 3 feet from the side of the building. If the businesses require racks that extend any farther, they must also apply for an outdoor seating application.

The application for outdoor seating is on the city’s website under Forms.

“While we are complying with the Governor’s Order, the most important goal is to keep people safe,” Lynn said.
