More than 35 people were cited for breaking Newark's social gathering rules Monday night after city police responded to reports of loud music coming from an apartment.

Officers were called to the apartment, located in the first block of Center St., just after 11:45 p.m. When officers entered the apartment, they found more than 30 people inside, police said.

Officers cited the three people who live in the apartment with music violations. Thirty-six total people were also cited for violating Newark's ordinance that limits indoor gatherings to 10 people.

Everyone cited was given summonses and released at the scene.

Newark police have been strict in enforcing the city's coronavirus gathering restrictions. Just before Halloween, officers broke up three separate parties, which resulted in citations and some suspensions from the University of Delaware.

In early September, too, police cited dozens after breaking up a party attended by about 75 people. The event was hosted by three UD students.

Violations of Newark's gathering rules, which limit indoor gatherings to 10 people, can result in fines or community service. The city's gathering limit was previously 12 people, but that number was reduced in late November.
